Identity theft protection is at the forefront of many people’s minds recently. Thankfully, the US government has taken this into account and is passing legislation to protect citizens. Earlier this year, we told you about the Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief, and Consumer Protection Act. This new law will allow all Americans to request credit freezes from each of the three major bureaus, no matter where in the country they live. In this article we will provide you with the facts about the new credit freeze law so that you can be prepared when September 21st rolls around.

Free Credit Freezes For All Americans

Previously, each state was able to determine their own, individual laws regarding credit freezes and who could request one. September 21st, this will no longer be the case. All of America will have standardized guidelines regarding credit freezes.

  • Free credit freezes for all Americans. Previously, some states may have required a fee to be paid in order to freeze your credit.
  • Parents may put a freeze on their children’s credit, until the child reaches the age of 16.
  • Credit freezes will now last for a period of one year. Currently, initial credit freezes last for 90 days. If you’ve been a victim of identity theft, you can recieve an extended freeze for up to seven years.

About Credit Freezes

Credit freezes are an additional roadblock for criminals attempting to open credit using your information. Freezing your credit will not keep you from opening lines of credit and your current lines of credit will not be affected. When you request a freeze, you will be given or will select a PIN number. This will allow you to unfreeze your credit for a limited amount of time in order to open new lines of credit.
